4 Common Meditation Hurdles And How To Dance Right Through Them

Meditation promises an oasis of calm. Yet, the barrier to entry can seem daunting.

The most common hurdles during meditation are:

  • Racing thoughts
  • Inability to sit still
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Distractions and boredom

Overcoming these hurdles is found not by seeing them as roadblocks but as guideposts that can help you unlock a consistent, deepening practice.

Shift Your Identity With Lofty Questions

We have all recited positive affirmations at some point in our lives. But they have two inherent limitations:

  1. They don’t account for self-image and self-identity.
  2. And when you affirm something that goes against your current self-image, your rational mind will instantly try to negate the affirmation.

Instead, there's a more powerful technique to trick the mind that bypasses your current self-image and eradicates self-doubt.

Present your mind a "lofty question" by asking it a question starting with “why.”

So instead of saying, “I am so confident” or “I am so creative,” you ask:

  • “Why am I so confident in all social situations?”
  • “Why am I so creative every day?”

The mind loves questions — and you can amp up the impact this has on your subconscious by incorporating an element of identity to your question.

  • "Why am I a charismatic social magnet and leader?"
  • "Why am I a wealthy entrepreneur?"
  • "Why am I always creating from my soul like a world-renowned artist?"

To create your own identity-based lofty questions:

  1. Pick a goal or outcome you want to manifest in your life.
  2. Link it to a specific identity. (What type of person do you need to become?)
  3. Write a "why question" around this identity, and repeat it every morning and before bed at night.

You Manifest What You Believe About Yourself. Period.

Conviction is the bedrock of your voice as a conscious creator—a force that cannot be found in books, others, or institutions; it is only discovered within. Once you embrace it energetically, there’s no turning back. It becomes the guardian of your creative path.

It cannot be any other way.

Robert Frost wrote:

“You’re always believing ahead of your evidence. What was the evidence I could write a poem? I just believed it. The most creative thing in us is to believe in a thing.”

With that said though, we are pack animals and the seedlings of our belief must take root from somewhere. All it takes is one person to truly see us. Who might that be for you?

E.E. Cummings wrote:

“We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

Let Go Of Your Worries And Limitations With This Guided Meditation

I once heard about this fascinating tradition in Hawaii where a worried person would create a picture of all the things that worry them and put them in a canoe. Then, they would watch the canoe sail out off to sea and keep watching as it sail right over the horizon.

Drawing inspiration from that tradition, this guided meditation is designed to help you let go of any of the following.:

  • Problems you are obsessing over
  • Daily worries and concerns
  • Limiting beliefs

And finally, a small experiment to explore your own consciousness and sense of self.

The Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, wrote:

“I am so glad you are here. It helps me realize how beautiful my world is."

Stand before a mirror, look into your eyes, and whisper these words to yourself. Repeat them slowly with presence and gentleness for about a minute. Keep gazing into your eyes as you speak these words.

Then, consider:

  • Who are you talking to?
  • Who is the "you" that is whispering?
