Become A Brick Layer To Build Better Habits πŸ‘·πŸΌ

I'm sure you heard of some of these sayings:

β€œOut of sight out of mind.”

β€œBetter late than never.”

"Beggars can't be choosers."

β€œThe more the merrier.”

"A friend in need is a friend indeed."

"You can't have your cake and eat it too." (this one never made much sense to me)

They are all attributed to John Heywood an English writer and musician known for his plays, poems, and collection of proverbs who lived in the 1500s.

It's pretty amazing that many of these well-known phrases and quotes created in the 1500s are not only still used today but are all attributed to one person. You can check out the full list here.

In this short article by James Clear, he details how one particular phrase from Heywood can be used as a mindset to build better habits:

β€œRome wasn't built in a day.”

Typically, this phrase serves as a reminder of the time needed to create something great.

And while that's true, it does take time to master a skill, get a habit to stick, or achieve something audacious, he points out that it’s better to remember the other side of this story:

Rome wasn’t built in a day, but they were laying bricks every hour.

Because laying a brick every day, year after year is how you build an empire.

5 Questions That Could Change Our Lives

Tim Ferriss originally published his famous "17 Questions That Changed My Life" years ago which quickly became a viral hit online. Recently I saw that he released it as a free mini-ebook. While some of the 17 are business-related, many of the ideas behind them can be applied to all areas of life.

There are 5 in particular that I really love and I'm trying to adopt them as mindsets to experiment with throughout my life.

  1. What if I did the opposite for 48 hours?
  2. If I could only work 2 hours per week, what would I do?
  3. What if I could only subtract to solve problems?
  4. Could it be that everything is fine and complete as is?
  5. What would this look like if it were easy?

πŸ‘‰ You can download the full mini eBook here.

// In Case You Missed It ::

Go Deep Not Wide

In last week's newsletter, I wrote about how it's so easy these days to become overwhelmed and distracted by our world of content overload. But if we can have the mindset that 90% of everything is crap, it can help us navigate through the noise and stay focused on what's matters most.

We can take this mindset further by pairing it with the idea of "going deep and not wide" in life.

I first came across this idea from watching the TV show Your Honor in which it was a central theme one of the characters kept harkening back to.

It became the inspiration for my latest YouTube video as a philosophy for everything we do in life.

// This Oughta Put A Smile On Your Face 😊 ::

Lastly, I watched this video this morning and I had to share it because it is so moving and hilarious.

YouTuber Mark Rober created this touching video titled The Truth About My Son introducing viewers to his autistic son. For obvious reasons, he had always kept him out of his videos, but he really wanted people to truly understand the misconceptions about autism and share the unbridled enthusiasm and love that children on the spectrum have in their hearts.

This will literally put a smile on your face.
